Joan L. Simunic, PhD

Joan L. Simunic, Ph.D. is Of Counsel in Flaster Greenberg's Intellectual Property Department and a member in the firm's Patent Practice Group. 

Dr. Simunic has more than 25 years of experience in patent prosecution, counseling and opinions, due diligence, licensing, patent infringement litigation, trademark prosecution, and trade secret protection in areas such as exosome-based compositions, catalyst compositions, nanomaterials, packaging films, graphene-based materials, virtual imaging software, fertilizer compositions and agricultural products

Most recently, she has provided legal services for start-up companies emerging from university incubators. She also served as general counsel for a multinational specialty chemical company, and vice president of corporate operations for a start-up biotechnology company.

In addition to her legal experience, Dr. Simunic has a Ph.D. in chemistry and extensive industrial experience directing interdepartmental scientific project teams. She has led research teams developing detergents, dental care products, air fresheners, healthcare products, natural gas derivatives, alternative fuels, biomimetic catalysts, polymer materials, and specialty packaging materials, and has conducted kinetic and mechanistic studies on organic and organometallic compounds. As an adjunct professor, Dr. Simunic taught general chemistry and organic chemistry courses at Iowa State University, Northern Kentucky University and Indiana University Southeast.
