The wait is over: New Jersey's sweeping amendments to the Family Leave Act are officially in effect.
Effective July 17, 2026, the NJFLA now covers employers with 15 or more employees and extends eligibility to employees who have worked just three months and 250 hours.
These changes significantly broaden the reach of the statute and may require many employers, particularly small and mid-sized businesses that were previously exempt, to revisit their leave administration practices immediately.
With expanded coverage, reduced eligibility thresholds, and lingering questions regarding job restoration rights for individuals receiving Temporary Disability Insurance or Family Leave Insurance benefits, employers should ensure that their policies and procedures align with the new requirements and remain alert for additional guidance from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
