James J. Hatton focuses his practice on patent litigation in federal district and appellate courts. James brings particular insight to matters involving life sciences and biotechnology technologies with experience in Paragraph IV litigation with respect to formulation compounds and drug dosing administration.
Prior to joining Flaster Greenberg, he worked at an intellectual property litigation boutique that specialized in complex high-stakes litigation. James represented start-up companies asserting their intellectual property against some of the largest technological companies in the world. His practice has covered a wide range of technologies, including digital media, audio playback, semiconductor chips, Wi-Fi mesh networks, automatic speech recognition, and more.
James also served in the United States Army, first as a commander in the Army Reserve and later on active duty in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. During his active-duty service, he was appointed a Special Assistant United States Attorney with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, where he prosecuted numerous federal cases and argued several dispositive motions before the court. He concluded his military service after six years.
James earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from SUNY Brockport and his J.D. from the University at Buffalo School of Law. While in law school, he served as a judicial intern to the Honorable John L. Sinatra, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.
In addition to his practice, James maintains an active pro bono commitment. He represents veterans in matters involving service-connected disability claims and ratings decisions before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
