June 23, 2016 | Legal Alert
Renee C. Vidal

According to a recent survey conducted by, 63 percent of Americans do not have a Will and 9 percent of Americans have a Will that is out of date.  The individuals who were most likely to have Wills that were out of date earned over $100,000 a year.  The survey results were released on the heels of the death of music icon Prince, who reportedly has an estate valued in excess of $300 million, and died without a Will.

Having a Will is an important part of an estate plan that governs the distribution of property at death.  Other important elements of an effective estate plan include tools to minimize death taxes, use trusts, powers of attorney and living wills.
