Anti-Defamation League (ADL)

Every December, public school students, parents, teachers and administrators face the difficult task of acknowledging the various religious and secular holiday traditions celebrated during that time of year.  The issue of the proper role of religion in the public schools continues to be the subject of great controversy.  Join Flaster Greenberg PC and the Anti-Defamation League for a discussion on the legal issues of religious freedom and expression that arise in the public schools during the winter holidays and throughout the school year and how we can create inclusive school environments that respect different beliefs and practices.

Speaker:

Melissa Garlick is the Eastern States Civil Rights Counsel for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a non-profit organization dedicated to combatting bigotry, prejudice and anti-Semitism. In her role, Melissa is responsible for providing legal guidance to and for overseeing the civil rights agenda for five offices in the Eastern United States on areas including hate crimes, discrimination complaints, church-state, freedom of speech, immigration, and bullying. Prior to joining ADL, Melissa worked as legislative director and legal counsel in the Office of Massachusetts State Senator James Eldridge, where she worked in a wide range of policy and legislative issues, including housing, civil rights, and immigration. Melissa is an active member of the Women’s Bar Association of Massachusetts and the Boston Bar Association.
